Books I like…

the snowman

The Snowman by Raymond Briggs will always be a favourite book of mine and classic story at this time of year. Briggs illustrative style speaks volumes and makes such an impression that no words are even necessary. Instead what can be found across the pages are his countless drawings and thumbnail sketches laid out like stamps, ready for the makings of an animation. In fact both have became a reality since the book was first produced and the unforgettable illustrations have become the inspiration for everything from music through to film. Just last year the short film The Snowman and the Snowdog was created to mark the 30th anniversary of the original Snowman animation created by John Coates. Andy Burrows and Ilan Eshkeri were responsible for the soundtrack and last week appeared at the Union Chapel in London alongside other artists and performers to celebrate the spirit of the Snowman and Christmas in a venue that is in itself full of wonder.
